Composites Evolution introduces new epoxy prepreg system
Composites Evolution, an UK-based manufacturer of prepregs for lightweight composite structures recently announced that a visual-quality epoxy component prepreg for laminates up to 50 mm thick has been developed. It can be cured in a single shot using a conventional
autoclave or press curing technique, with a low risk of exotherms. The material is readily available and, like all other materials in the Composites Evolution EPC series, has durable handling and excellent tack properties.
Evopreg® EPC205 epoxy component prepregs can be used in a wide variety of markets and applications, including inserts, furniture, sporting goods, sculptures, and structural repairs. Technical Specialist, Roger Elliott explains further: “Historically, composite inserts have been laminated in flat sheets, bonded together to create thick laminates, and then machined to the necessary surface profile. Using EPC205, thick laminates can be laminated over contoured moulds to the desired thickness and cured in a single shot cure. With the use of EPC205, inserts can be designed with the optimum shape, thickness and composites structure, as well as providing a solid laminate for attachments and mechanical fasteners. This process results in a decrease in production time and cost as well as an improvement in the mechanical properties of the insert because bond lines are eliminated.”
